Preface

As I was climbing the career ladder, I found myself in a sales position with a large software firm that required me to travel extensively across the US west of the Mississippi. I recall like it was yesterday, my first trip to see a client. I was with my boss. We were at the ticket counter getting our boarding passes. He told the ticket woman, a striking blonde, to seat us in aisle seats. I quickly corrected him, explaining that I preferred a window seat, that I liked to observe and take in the sights, the clouds, the wonder. Just as quickly as I got the words out, he uttered ... "you'll get over that". Fast forward 30 years. I've booked hundreds of thousands of air miles since then and guess what. I never got over it.

What once had only literal meaning now has become a metaphor for living a happy and contented life. I have never lost the childlike wonder of a walk after a rain shower when the moisture in the air carries the smells of the season, the thrill of a drive through Flint Hills in Kansas to watch the range fires in the spring, the view from the window seat of a 747.

The secret to happiness is to never get over the window seat!
